A family member IN Iraq... without the equipment or training he needs!!
I just got an email from my family member in Iraq... and it doesn't sound pretty.
I'll first say that he's doing well and his, along with his fellow soldier's morale, is high given the circumstances. But that doesn't negate two troubling aspects of his email.
To start, before the invasion began, many experts on TV and in the print media said that one of the worst situations for our Army to potentially get involved with in Iraq would be patrolling the street in a urban setting... and that's exactly what my family member is doing... patrolling the street in an urban environment. Why is that bad, you may ask? It's bad because our Army shouldn't be used as a policing force. It should be used to eradicate the threat in an area so the police can keep the peace. Our Army isn't trained in police tactics, they are trained in military tactics. So one troubling aspect is lack of training to deal with the situation at hand.
The second aspect that's even more troubling is a shortage of bullet proof vests! Enough so that his parents, this weekend, are going to go out, buy one and ship it off to him!!!! I guess this is what Rumsfeld meant when he said that he wanted to make the invasion force lite and fast. I'm utterly beside myself typing this... how could we send our troops into theater without the basic equipment to keep them safe? My blood is boiling...
Oh yeah, and where are those WMD's we were promised? Don't hold your breath...
Disgustedly yours,
Mr. Purple
