Would renaming "taxes" "dues" help?
Op-Ed Contributor to the NYTimes Richard Conniff wants to rename "taxes" "dues" in an effort to change the disgust that people get in their head when thinking about or talking about or paying their taxes.
I agree... anything we can do to make the debate over our fiscal discipline less an "all or nothing" choice and more a reasonable and responsible discussion is a plus in my book. As I wrote in the past about taxes, it shouldn't be about high or low taxes, for god's sake we ALL want LOW taxes, it should be about the right amount of taxes that fit the situation we find ourselves in... which is $9 TRILLION in debt, over a $400 BILLION yearly budget deficit and a war in Iraq being paid by money loaned from the Chinese to the tune of $150+ BILLION per year. Where have all the fiscal conservatives gone? Maybe Bush 2.0 is hiding them in an "undisclosed" location...
We should raise taxes to deal with the situation that Bush 2.0 has helped dig us deeper into and then, when we have a balanced budget with some surplus going to our debt for a couple years, lower taxes a little, then when we have a balanced budget and more surplus going to our debt for a few more years, lower taxes some more, and so on and so on... this is what I had to do with my own personal finances when I was in debt so why should the government get to stick their head in the sand, act like nothing is wrong and pass the buck, literally?
